Reading Movement Without Overreacting

What a quarter-on-quarter percentage does — and does not — tell you.

In brief

  • A quarter-on-quarter figure says nothing alone about whether it is good or significant.
  • Ask three questions: what is the base, is it a trend, and what changed?
  • Falls deserve the same care: tighter verification can lower a number and improve trust.

Period movement is one of the most useful pieces of information SSI™ publishes, and one of the easiest to misread.

A figure such as +8.4% QoQ means the measure was 8.4 percent higher this quarter than last. On its own, it says nothing about whether that is good, sustainable or significant.

Three questions put it in context. What is the base? An increase of eight percent on a small number is a handful of creators; on a large number it is thousands. Early in any economy’s life, percentages run large because bases are small. Is it a trend? One quarter is one observation. Direction becomes meaningful when it persists across several. What changed? Growth can come from new activity, from existing activity being newly verified, or from a change in how something is counted. A good report says which.

  1. What is the base?

Eight percent of a small number is a handful of creators; of a large one it is thousands. Early percentages run large because bases are small.

  2. Is it a trend?

One quarter is one observation. Direction becomes meaningful when it persists.

  3. What changed?

Growth can come from new activity, newly verified activity, or a change in how something is counted.

Falls deserve the same treatment. A quarter of decline in a young economy may reflect seasonality, a platform transition or tighter verification — the last of which may actually improve trust and resilience.

SSI™ publishes movement so that readers can think, not so that they can react. Watch direction across quarters, read the method, and treat any single number as a sentence rather than a story.
